Visiting Portree and the Isle of Skye: what to do, where to eat, what to look for

The Isle of Skye is one of the most visually stunning places I have ever visited. Every turn, every new road, everywhere you looked, there was something more beautiful than the last.

We stayed two nights in Portree and I feel I could have stayed two months. Not because there was so much to do, but precisely because there was not.

It was peaceful and stunningly gorgeous and I fancied myself sitting in a cute upper attic room, staring out at the sea and writing my memoir (a true testament to how much I love a place, when I envision sitting and writing for months).

If you're looking for a food recommendation, then check out the Caledonian Cafe for a relaxed vibe, decent prices, good house wine and beers, and "possibly the best burger I've had in my entire life" (a trusted source) :)

Coral beach

This was a very windy and pretty long walk to reach this little paradise, but it was well worth it. A white sand, coral beach on the west coast of the Isle in beautiful but frigid Scotland is a sight to behold!

dunvegan castle

This castle is still inhabited by the Chief of the Clan Macleod, and has been continuously inhabited by the family for 800 years. How cool is that!?

Fairy Pools

We checked out the famed Fairy Pools, which were very cool but maybe don't quite live up to the hype? In that the editing of people's photos lead them to look other-worldly.

In real life, they are a really cool formation of pools and falls stumbling over rocks and paths, intertwined and enticing and with random colours popping up here and there.

Ok, so I take that back...I guess they are quite enchanting...!

Neist Point

People technically come here for the lighthouse but holy hannah, it is quite the walk to reach it and we unfortunately landed there smack dab in mid afternoon when the sun was intense and we weren't going to get any optimal shots of the lighthouse.

Fortunately for us, the views on the other side were gorgeous and there was an awesome place we could climb up, up, and up to survey the area below! Stunning.

take aways

While two nights and one and a half days was enough time to get a feel for the Isle of Skye and Portree, it was a bit rushed. I'd recommend giving yourself minimum two full days and nights, but honestly, if you have the time you should aim for three or four. It's THAT beautiful and peaceful.

Also, be aware of exact locations when you are booking hotels or AirBnBs; many locations say Portree but are actually rural and not so near to amenities. Which could be nice too, but best to know and be prepared is all.

Have you been? Tell me all about it! What did I miss!?
